Camberwell is a sophisticated and prestigious suburb with astonishing vintage treelined streets, desirable homes, and a lovely, hilly shopping strip. Located 10kms east of the Melbourne CBD, Camberwell is a top-ranked suburb with its period houses, impressive schools and lively shopping strip.

Its local government area is the City of Boroondara. At the 2016 Census, Camberwell had a population of 22,081.

The median price of a four-bedroom detached house in Camberwell in April 2018 was above A$2.5 million, while the median rent was A$895 a week.

The western, southern, and eastern boundaries of the suburb generally follow Burke Road, Toorak Road, and Warrigal Road. 

Known for grand, historic residences and tranquil, leafy streets, Camberwell is commonly regarded as one of Melbourne’s most prestigious and exclusive suburbs.

History of Camberwell, VIC

Camberwell received its name due to an early settler being reminded of the way three roads intersected in the south London district of Camberwell. 

This intersection is now known as Camberwell Junction. The development that followed was a product of Melbourne’s suburban rail network in the 1880s.

The Prospect Hill Road Precinct area is adjacent to the railway station and is the oldest part of the suburb. The original subdivision was relatively generous blocks, which were filled with fine Victorian and Edwardian houses. Due to its hilly topography, many east-west streets in the Prospect Hill area have an excellent view of Melbourne’s Central Business District. 

Though the area was originally agricultural, Camberwell is now one of the most well-established of Melbourne’s affluent suburbs. It is part of the City of Boroondara, the local government area with the lowest socio-economic disadvantage index in Australia. There is almost no industrial land in Camberwell, and commercial uses are concentrated near the Burke Road precinct, which has long been one of the busiest in suburban Melbourne. House prices in Boroondara are well above the metropolitan median, and those in the Prospect Hill Road Precinct are several times the Boroondara median.

Very well serviced by trains (4 train stations!!), shops (shopping strip along Burke Road, Camberwell Road, Riversdale Road), playgrounds and a very nice library. After moving here I don’t think I could like in any other suburb.

I have lived in many suburbs in Melbourne both east and west. I believe that Camberwell is definitely one of the friendliest suburbs. The shopping is fantastic too – absolutely love the Sunday market and the Camberwell food market is fabulous too. The whole suburb has a wonderful ambience. There are some really fantastic restaurants, great coffee and love the Rivoli.

After living in rented accommodation for several years in Kew and Hawthorn East, we finally came for us to finally buy a house. We were keen on Kew and Hawthorn. However, we found that when we liked a house and school, we didn’t like the street and lack of transport and lacks of shops nearby. In other words we couldn’t find a house that ticked ALL our boxes. So we decided to look at Camberwell. Can’t ever imagine how we overlooked this gem of a suburb! Seriously, I doubt any other suburb offers so much – fantastic houses, large blocks of land, transport – 3 rail stations for 1 suburb, trams, shops, parks, lots and lots of tree lined streets, one of the best state primary schools in Victoria, SAFE – close to the CBD – the list is endless. I have to say all this comes at a price and houses are very expensive. BUT, it offers the best value for money as no other suburb in my opinion comes a close second when you are fussy and have pages of boxes to tick!
